Foreign Policy Change

“ The great role of conduct for us, in regards to foreign nations, is the extending our commercial relations to have with them as little political connections as possible… It is our true policy to steer clear of permanent alliances with any portion of the foreign world… We may safely trust to temporary alliances for extraordinary emergencies.”

President George Washington
Farewell Address September 1796

President Washington had it right. Does not the Father of this Country understand what was and still is important and what should be our position on foreign policy today? The only things that have changed in the last 211 years is the lack of Patriotic resolve, the turning away from securing our borders and the relinquishing of our national sovereignty.

Each and every one of our foreign military commitments must be revisited and readdressed. Is it not time for the countries of Europe to protect themselves, to have their own military, to pay their own way? Before 1949 and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the United States was not involved in any foreign alliance around the world. I believe we must work toward the manner in which we operated for the first 170 years – instead of the last 59 years. We are not Rome. We need not build an Empire. History will repeat itself. Look to the British Empire of the early 20th Century – how easily they fall when involved with continual warfare.

“ When people speak to you about a preventive war, you tell them to go and fight it. After my experience, I have come to hate war.”

President Dwight Eisenhower

The US cannot be the world’s police force. We cannot right every wrong and punish every act of aggression between two countries that does not prove a national security risk to the US. Nor remove every tyrant or despot and replace him or her with democratic elections. We are not the protector of a new world order. We are the protector of American sovereignty. We should not be boastful throughout the world with ultimatums, “ You are either with us or you are against us.” Just because, we at this time, are the only remaining Superpower, we must refrain from dictating our beliefs to the entire world community. Lead by example, not by imposition.

Democracy alone does not make a successful country. The US itself is slowly ceasing to be a democratic society. The majority of US citizens want to end illegal immigration, have English as the National language and to secure our borders. But the will of the Majority is not being obeyed on the various levels in government. Pass the buck. Excuses. Excuses. It is folly to believe that only the democratic elections in Iraq will solve centuries old debates and conflict between the Sunnis and Shia. In the most recent Iraq elections, 25% of the elected officials are women; however, the elected women are Muslim and consistently vote against Women’s Rights issues. Are Iraqi women benefiting from the democratic process? President John Adams said, “Our Constitution was written for a religious and virtuous people; it will serve no other.” The democratic election works in the US because of our underlying reliance on God and Judeo-Christian teachings. We must strengthen our own democratic process or the people will revolt here as well.

The US foreign policy must not be about installing democracy around the world. And the ultimate goal of US foreign policy must not be the goal of ending tyranny. The US should stay out of other countries' affairs unless there is a clear threat to our national security. American foreign policy should be to protect the security of the United States and its allies. PERIOD.

I am confident in our great country and her people, but we must change the direction of foreign policy and change our concerns for the rest of the world. Confinement before aggression. American democracy before the democracy of a foreign country. American security before the security of a foreign country. American sovereignty before the concerns of any other country.
